The modernization of the city gives rise to the idea of a large exhibition center similar to the London Industrial Fair building, the
Crystal Palace. The laying of the first stone was carried out by King Pedro V, in 1861, taking advantage of his presence in the city to inaugurate the Porto Industrial Exhibition and other official
participations. The Crystal Palace building would be inaugurated in 1865, with the presence of the royal couple, D. Luís I and D. Maria Pia, for the Universal Portuguese and Peninsula Exhibition.
